After a sinful night followed by a sound sleep, Lorn was ready for the big event. Today was the day the wastrels were invited inside the steel wall that surrounded the Triple Towers. He had dressed quickly and quietly, letting Kallen sleep. It wasn’t long before he glanced out the window and saw the crowd forming outside the wall. There was an unorganized line of people traveling over the sands toward the towers. Women, men, and children braved the winds and headed toward salvation. Lorn was determined to be there when they arrived. With his security team, he made his way down to the grand room. From there, Lorn supervised as tents were erected in the courtyard. All wastrels would be offered clean water for bathing, food, and use of the healing chamber.
“Mr. President.”
Lorn didn’t immediately react to the address. He went about setting up security plans on his tablet as he stood to the side of the closed steel doors.
“Excuse me, Mr. President...Lorn.”
Lorn jerked his head up. He blushed slightly as he faced Miles. “Um, yes. What is it?”
“We doubled the security in the areas you suggested. The tents are ready. We have a steel, electrified net over the area of wall destroyed by the explosion. If we’re going to open the doors, it should be safe.”
“When will the wall be complete?” It had been destroyed by the traitor Rachella before she ran and took her own life. It was a memory he didn’t wish to relive.
“Several months.”
“Is Kallen down yet?” Lorn smiled as he thought of the blond wastrel.
Miles spoke into his communication link, a tube-like structure with small, shiny squares on the outer layer. “Yes, sir. He’s in the grand room on his way out.”
“Excellent.” Lorn waited patiently for his lover. He placed the table in his back pocket and invited community members to interact with the newcomers. It would take time for them all to mingle and trust. Several citizens of the towers refused to acknowledge the new additions.
“Hey, big boy.” Kallen grinned as he approached.
Lorn reached out to hold his hand. “All right, give the order. Open the doors.” Lorn held his breath as Miles nodded. The steel doors began to open, guards increased their alertness. The sun glinted off the moving objects and then a gush of sandy wind entered the courtyard. “Welcome to the Triple Towers,” Lorn bellowed.
A few wastrels were hesitant and only one family came forth. Lorn ushered them inside and as they went into the food tent more began to enter. Lorn stepped back. He greeted everyone that even glanced his way. “Please come on in. The green tent has food, the blue is bathing, and if you form a line near the yellow tent we can get you into a healing chamber for any ailments.”
The trust was low. The community members seemed anxious but still nervous. None of them came forth until this little redheaded girl stepped forward and gave a small doll to a wastrel girl. Lorn’s smile grew as the children’s laughter began to echo over the shuffling of feet.
